Second Verse, Same as the First

It's one of the back legs so now I'll keep it on my bench for a week and decide what I do and don't like about it.

I have a couple christmas presents to make in the next few days that may be of interest to those looking for more on hollows and rounds...stay tuned

  1. Hi Matt,

Having never carved anything (except the old stick as a boy) could you give me an indication on how much time is involved in shaping and carving a leg like the one in the pic?

Are you into carving in general, or is it because it comes with building this piece that you 'shine some light' on the topic?

    Thanks, I enjoy your blogposts.

  2. I spent almost 2.5 hours carving the second side of that leg and probably 3 drawing/carving the first. I don't really have much carving experience. I have to take my time because I've done very few. By the time I get to the fourth leg I will have cut that time down considerably. (It will be back up there again by the time I do another one down the road.)

The ball and claw probably took 3 hours to do the fourth one.

Dimensioning and general shaping is pretty quick.

I imagine these times being GROSSLY different for somebody with only a moderate amount of experience.
